As a freshman, Milroy appeared in 11 games for the Fighting Illini, including seven starts. His first career start was arguably his best, as he earned the win over Chicago State by allowing only one run over five innings while striking out five. Last summer Milroy played in the Coastal Plain League for the Fayetteville SwampDogs, seeing time both on the mound and in the field. Out of high school, the Boston Red Sox selected Milroy in the 35th round of the 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft. As a senior he hit .466 with eight doubles, seven triples, four home runs, and 35 RBI. On the mound, he went 7-2 with a 1.72 ERA and 101 strikeouts over 51.2 innings.
