This year Verdi established himself as one of the top defensive shortstops in the Big East conference, and a reliable option at the plate for Connecticut. In 2012 he started all 57 games for the Huskies at shortstop, hitting .289 with 35 RBIs. In his freshmen season in 2011 Verdi played sporadically throughout the season, making 35 appearances and 25 starts. His .230 average and .947 fielding percentage that year prepared him to take the reigns as the everyday shortstop for Connecticut this year. Verdi was named All-State at Bishop Hendricken High School in Warwick, Rhode Island. During his prep career he guided his team to four consecutive state championships.
